Our commitment to the climate for a better future
Salzgitter AG and the KHS Group have made it their aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.
As a Group company, KHS will actively and consistently contribute to the achievement of this target with its own measures. To this end, together with Salzgitter AG the KHS Group has pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. The results of the now completed validation process by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) confirm that we are on the right course and endorse the Group’s ambitious climate goals.
They meet the requirements of the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement. Compared to base year 2021, in the short term the KHS Group will lower its greenhouse gas emissions in categories scope 1 (emissions from direct stationary and mobile combustion) and scope 2 (emissions generated by the use of purchased electricity) by around 36.5% by 2028.
In scope 3 (emissions generated throughout the upstream and downstream company value chain), we aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 20%.
The Group and its companies want to achieve the long-term target of net zero, also science-based, by 2050 at the latest.
Current state of greenhouse gas reduction
Our development with reference to business year 2025 shows that we are making progress on our reduction path.
- Scopes 1 + 2 (market-based): KHS has cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 13.1% compared to the base year and is still clearly aiming to reach its target of -36.5% by 2028 (see note).
- Scope 3: here, KHS has already achieved a reduction of 40.9% over 2021, thus already considerably exceeding its target of -20% by 2028.
Please note: KHS already used a high above-average quota of green electricity of 69% in base year 2021 and thus far exceeded the relevant benchmark. In this context, the given scope 1 and 2 reduction targets are therefore fairly ambitious: the remaining savings potential is structurally more difficult to exploit than in comparable companies with a lower initial consumption of renewable energies.
